How to make do-it-yourself Zolotukhin cells for rabbits
Many breeders prefer to make their own cages for rabbits. This allows you to save money and get products of the desired size. In addition, rabbitries do not have complex knots and are available for manufacture even to a beginner. Let's get acquainted with one of the most successful and proven housing designs for rabbits - the Zolotukhin cage.
Benefits of using
The cells developed by the popular rabbit breeder Nikolai Zolotukhin have the following advantages:
- made of affordable and affordable materials;
- do not require large free space;
- make it easy to care for pets and maintain the cage;
- can be located indoors or on a plot;
- optimally lit and have good natural ventilation;
- not prone to drafts.
Important! Many years of experience of Nikolai Zolotukhin allowed him to come up with the most comfortable housing for rabbits. Under these conditions, they feel great, easily acquire offspring and rarely get sick.
How to make Zolotukhin cells with your own hands
The author of this design believed that drawings are not required for its manufacture. However, to facilitate the task, it is better to use the diagrams and dimensions given here.

Design and Dimensions
The Zolotukhin cage is a three-tier rabbitry, where 6 individuals live simultaneously. Its construction provides that each next floor protrudes 150-200 mm beyond the lower. This is necessary so that the waste products of the upper residents do not end up on the lower floors. In addition, the walls of the first and second floors are made with a slope, which also helps the excrement to fall directly to the floor or the ground.Instead of a conventional pallet with a metal mesh, wooden or plywood floors are arranged on the floor. Only a small area near the back wall is covered by a strip of mesh. According to the observations of rabbit breeders, animals usually defecate at the back wall, so this grid should prevent the wooden floor from getting wet. Dimensions are taken depending on the size of the pets. Medium and large breeds are proposed to settle in such a dwelling:
- width - 2000 mm;
- height - 1500 mm;
- depth - 700-800 mm;
- mesh width - 150-200 mm;
- floor slope - 50–70 mm;
- the size of the entrance door is 400 × 400 mm.
Dimensions of the winter mother liquor:
- plan size - 400 × 400 mm;
- entrance height - 150 mm;
- front wall height - 160 mm;
- the height of the back wall is 270 mm.
Did you know? Rabbits are amazingly fast animals. They not only jump well, but also chew food at an incredible speed of 120 movements per minute. And they possess more than 17 thousand taste buds, which allows them to clearly distinguish the taste of food.
All parameters are indicative, and they can be changed to your own needs.
Tools and materials for work
- wooden board (thickness 15–20 mm);
- wooden blocks and beams;
- metal mesh with small holes;
- roofing slate;
- sheet metal (thickness 0.4–0.5 mm).
- electric or chainsaw;
- electric drill;
- wood screws;
The Zolotukhin cell is made in several stages.
It is necessary to knock down wooden beams in the amount of 4 pieces (length 2000 mm), connecting them across the crossbars so that the frame comes out 2000 mm wide and 800 mm deep. The floors of the dwelling should go in increments of 500 mm, starting from the base. The result is a reliable three-tiered product with high legs, which can be placed both in the yard and in enclosed spaces.
Flooring floors are made of wood, not reaching 150-200 mm to the rear wall. The resulting gap is closed with a fine lattice, which is attached to the beam with nails. To create the necessary slope, you can place a wooden block 50 mm high in front and cover the floor with a chipboard sheet. This will allow the feces to slide down to the back where the grate is located.All floors should be divided in two by small wooden slats for installing a sennik. The distance between them should be 200-300 mm. The back wall is sutured with polycarbonate, the sheets are tilted. As a result, the top wall of the first floor begins at the place where the lattice of the upper tier ends. Next, install the doors.
Important! If you cover the inner wooden parts of the cage with sheet metal, this will protect them from the sharp teeth of rabbits.
As a rule, they mount 1 door, covering all tiers at once. This is a wooden rack frame with a width of 400 mm with a stuffed metal mesh. In the uterine part, a lightproof door should be made, since the first time the rabbits should be in the dark. A frame of the same size is installed next to the door for feeding and walking the pets. It is divided into sodas and lattices and latches are attached to it. The sides of the whole product are made of wood or chipboard sheets.
The Zolotukhin cage is covered with ordinary slate, while the roof protrudes 50 mm behind the frame. This protects the outdoor cage from getting wet and rotting. The roof is attached to the frame with special slate nails with wide hats.
To organize a summer mother queen, you should separate a side 400 mm wide on the side. To do this, you can use a wooden partition with a height of 150-200 mm. It should allow the rabbit to get out of the uterine compartment, and the kids to stay inside. The edges of the septum should be covered with thin sheet metal.
On the edge of the cage it is necessary to arrange a side about 100 mm high so that the rabbits will not be outside when the queen is opened. The floor of the mother liquor should be covered with a layer of hay, which is used by the rabbit for rookery. A month after the birth of the babies, the partition can be removed and allowed to move freely throughout the house.
Winter motherboard is a compact box made of wood or plywood with a door and an extended rear. When necessary, they put him in a cage and just as easily removed from it. In cold terrain, its walls need to be insulated. The top of the box is equipped with a lid, through which it is convenient to look at the condition of the kids and periodically clean the house.
The main food for rabbits is grain and hay, so a feeding trough and a spacious sennik should be placed in their house. A feeder is a tray made of wood, the inner wall of which is 2 times lower than the outer, and the bottom has a slope of about 35 ° down. The inner surface of the feeder is lined with thin sheet metal. Holes are drilled on the sides for attachment to the wall. To save space, the structure enters the cage by about a third, and the rest remains outside.
Did you know? In the wild, the rabbit lives about 1 year, and in captivity, with good care, it can live up to 10-12 years. The record belongs to the rabbit, who lived as long as 19 years.
Then the feeder is nailed to the door. The net is placed inside so that there is a gap to the bottom of about 20 mm for the rash of feed. The sennik is built from small wooden slats in the shape of the letter V. It is arranged in the center between the slats that separate adjacent cells. The sennik needs to be filled with grass and dry hay.
Frequent manufacturing errors
While working on the Zolotukhin cell, small difficulties may arise, usually associated with a misunderstanding of the patterns and sizes. Among the most common mistakes are:
- The insufficient size of the door in the front wall makes it difficult to care for the cage and rabbits.
- The absence of legs leads to freezing of pets and makes it difficult to clean their excrement.
- Too small dimensions of the dwelling cause discomfort and adversely affect the health of rabbits.
- The absence of a bias in the floor of the dwelling leads to contamination of cells with feces.
Zolotukhin's cells are a convenient and uncomplicated version of rabbit housing. The design is inexpensive, easy to install and easy to maintain. And thanks to thoughtfulness, such a cage can be placed both indoors and outdoors, and be sure of the comfort of your pets.
